The DE Annex
***2023 Season Results***
That's a wrap for the inagural (partial) season of the DE Annex! If you just want the data on how the players I selected performed, that is all available here. Curious about my methodology, it is identical to my DT model detailed here.
As a reminder, the point of the Annex was to highlight some lower stakes suggestions with all of you in the form of players rostered in less than 5% of leagues in MyFantasyLeague. Given about 17% of MFL leagues use IDP, these players should be available in roughly 70% of leagues.
I plan to continue this series next season to highlight some streaming options as well as de facto waiver wire adds (Browning, Jennings, Diaby, Koonce, and Gross-Matos all were good holds after my initial play call). But before we can move forward, we must first look back. Here are some highlights and lowlights of the 2023 DE Annex.
2023 Annex MVPs
Bud Dupree, ATL
Dupree finished as overall DE3 in Week 13 during his stay in the Annex.
Malcolm Koonce, LV
Koonce finished as overall DE5 when called upon in Week 15 and was DE2 ROS.
Yaya Diaby, TB
Diaby was DE19 ROS after being highlighted in the Annex in Week 13.
Anfernee Jennings, NE
Jennings was ROS DE21 after appearing in the inaugural Week 12 Annex.
Performance by category
Using NPLB scoring (which gives a slight boost to DEs for tackles compared to LBs), I am generally happy with the results. In my leagues I strive for 20+ performances but will settle for 10+.
While I'm happy that I picked 'startable' players over 50% of the time from the deep end of the DE pool, I am more buoyed by the relatively low number of big whiffs which were more likely to cost your team a win.
12.24 = DE Annex Season average (excluding injuries)
Overall DE scoring average Weeks 12-17 was 8.87. This difference is statistically significant at p = .0293.
